The DePaulia - March 11, 2007
Poehler on the ice

By Delmy Cabrera
Staff Writer

Amy Poehler has a lot of things going on this year. She is celebrating her sixth season on "Saturday Night Live," working on eight different movies this year (including "Shrek the Third"), and performing once a week at the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York.

During my interview with her it was really hard not to freeze with nervousness because she is such an amazing comic and talented actress. She talked about everything from missing Chicago to her friends on "The Office."

In her new movie, "Blades of Glory," Poehler plays Fairchild, a competitive figure skater opposite Will Ferrell and John Heder. "Blades of Glory" is in a very unique and lonely movie category: it is a Sports/Comedy movie. Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy McElroy (Jon Heder) are banned from the singles category after a nasty and nationally televised brawl. They are both determined to win the gold, but can only do so as a team. The only thing that stands in their way is a fierce veteran team, Fairchild (Amy Poehler) and Stranz (Will Arnett). This becomes a fight to the finish and proves there is nothing fluffy in the world of figure skating.

I had the opportunity to talk to Amy and ask her a couple of questions.

The DePaulia (TD): From your comedy days in Chicago, what is your favorite memory?

Amy Poehler (AP): Oh god, there are so many! I was so broke when I lived in Chicago and I performed at Improv Olympic and Second City and that was when I started up with the UCB guys. So, I don't know if I can just pick one; I have so many memories. Maybe...maybe rolling pennies because I was so broke and then taking my bike and riding to free Improv shows. I have very nostalgic memories from my days in Chicago.

TD: You should come back soon!

AP: I want to! I definitely will!

TD: What is the best advice you can give someone from Chicago trying to get into "the business?"

AP: Get a nice winter jacket, keep your head down and spring will come soon [laughs].

TD: What about getting into comedy, what's the best advice there?

AP: Oh, I don't know. You know what my advice is? Don't do it! There are too many people in it already!

TD: In "Blades of Glory" you worked with Jenna Fisher from "The Office." Do you think you will ever guest star on the show, maybe as Jim's sister or something?

AP: Oh my god! Let me just say that I have tons of friends that work on "The Office" - Rashida Jones, Jenna Fisher, John Krasinski are all good friends of mine. And my friend Mike Schur is an executive producer and head writer for the show and used to work at "SNL." And [The Office] is a big, friendly family and I love that show and I love Carell. Carell used to be in Chicago when I was there. Then again, I think everyone is genius and I love that show. I don't even deserve to be at the foot of the king of comedy. But it was really fun working with Jenna, she plays me and Will's sister in this movie and we kind of treat her like crap. And it was a lot of fun because Jenna is so sweet.
