In Step With Amy Poehler
By James Brady

Between feature films, funny voices and free improv shows, this comedienne is the life of Saturday Night.

CUTE, BLOND AND A BRILLIANT COMEDIC ARTIST, Amy Poehler isn't the first cast member of NBC's Saturday Night Live to go Hollywood (think Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey). But currently she's the busiest, with a batch of feature films ready to pop. The first, Blades of Glory, due March 30, is about Olympic figure skaters. Two guys (Will Ferrell and Jon Heder) enter the competition as the first-ever male pair and compete against, among other pairs, Amy and her male partner--played by her real-life husband, actor Will Arnett.

"I play a Sonja Henie/Tanya Harding mix--a class act but ruthless," Amy explained, "and Will plays my somewhat-befuddled brother."

This could be amusing stuff, since she said none of them skates very well. "We had stunt people," she told me, "but we all had to take lessons--and I was the worst."

This, despite the fact that she grew up in snowy Burlington, Mass. "Yeah, people are always asking me about that," Amy continued, admitting: "I never skated as a child. But, being small, I don't have far to fall."

And Arnett would probably catch her anyway. The couple were introduced by mutual friends and, according to him, it was love at first sight. Married in 2003, they also worked together on the now-defunct Arrested Development, and Arnett regularly supports Amy from the audience at a local comedy series she does.

"Every Sunday, we do a free improv evening at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre," Amy said. "It's all people from SNL, The Daily Show and Conan. We're also doing free evenings in L.A., when we're there."

On May 11, fans everywhere can see her in another film, Woodcock, with Billy Bob Thornton. "It's a small role," Amy said. "But the real thrill of mine: Susan Sarandon is in it. I have a major-league crush on her."

Brady's Bits
Amy is in her sixth year as a Saturday Night Live regular. She's also in her third year as co-anchor of the show's enormously popular "Weekend Update." She's done dozens of impressions of different characters on SNL, including Dolly Parton, Madonna, Hillary Clinton, Martha Stewart--even Michael Jackson. "How much makeup did that take?" I asked. "I had to do the least makeup of any of us who 'do' Michael," she said, "because I have the littlest tip of the nose." In addition to having worked together on SNL, Amy shares another bond with Will Ferrell, her Blades of Glory co-star: Swedes. As it happens, her only brother, a lawyer, lives in Stockholm and is married to a local girl. "Will is married to a Swedish girl too," Amy said, "so we have lots in common to talk about."

Personal
Born Sept. 16, 1971, in Burlington, Mass. Married to Will Arnett since 2003.

Why You Know Her
She's been causing fits of laughter on SNL since 2001 and has taken hilarious turns on the silver screen in films like Mean Girls (2004).

What You Don't Know
She never had a nickname. "But," she tells us, "Alex Baze, a 'Weekend Update' writer, calls me Poehlercoaster--which secretly pleases me." And her favorite car? "Ric Ocasek."
